Disturbing, devastating and intoxicating. Crushed is the story of three teenage friends, Phoebe, Orla and Grace and their toxic relationships with each other.

A sense of foreboding rises from the first page, and when the darkest moment comes, it strikes hard, carving out the future for these three young lives. With shades of Heavenly Creatures, Hamer draws us in closest to Phoebe and her damaged relationship with her controlling mother, which starkly contrasts to Grace’s role as carer for her mum.

Hamer returns to her ‘red’ theme with glorious abundance along with a fairy tale quality, offering up details such as the wishing bowl and a declaration that Phoebe ‘is doomed to stay the same forever’.

Beautifully written, as always, this is Hamer at her very best.
